My first pattern welded knife
This is the first pattern welded knife I made with a 12 cm blade. The guard and pin are bronze and it has a Turkish walnut handle.
I made this when I was doing an apprenticeship with Willem Jonkers III, the smith to the Queen of the Netherlands. An apprentice can learn in two ways: by watching the master work or by the master standing by the apprentice and showing him how to do it. None of the above happened during my apprenticeship. This is why it only lasted three months.
The blade was made from any piece of crap from the corner of the workshop. In these days I did not know much about the proper process of pattern welding. I think it has 20 layers of stuff. I have no idea what metal, but it was the same stuff the 'Master' used for making pattern welded work. I have no idea if it is even hardenable (sorry Daryl). And this is the same person who after the broadcast of the documentary "Messen", went around telling people that he taught me everything I knew! |
