My military knives are used by people by the national security services. I am always suprised by the weight of so-called 'survival' knives in general production. These always seem to have hollow handles in which you can insert fishing hooks, sterilization tables, matches and a compass. But if you are captured, the first thing to be taken off you is your knife. So if you escape, where is your survival kit?

This is why I make my military knives light. This does not mean that they are not strong or cannot withstand hard use. My strategy is: if a knife is light enough to carry, you will most probably have it with you when you need it. It is no good having this amazing blade which you have to have airlifted in when you might need it. Weight means energy in carrying for extended periods of time. And if it's heavy you are not going to carry it.

The world famous US marine corps Kabar knife, which was usually carried by most marines during heavy fighting during the Second World War, Korea and Vietnam is actually quite a light, functional blade. This is all you need.

I tend to make the handles non slip as well as very comfortable in the hand, as I do with all my blades. With the difference that there usually is a second finger notch to allow for a good grip in the either push or pull cut.

Mostly my blades are double edged. This allows for push and pull cutting and maximum penetration in the stab. I make the blades pleasing to the eye and they come with a sheath made from leather which is Kydex lined, usually with a pin lock, as this is the most secure method of holding the blade in the sheath when undergoing rigorous activities.
